On Tuesday, I’m back. I take the same table in the corner. If I see Shane here, then it’ll be a coincidence, that’s all. I need to find out more about this woman.

Carrie comes over to me. “Morning, Ruth. Lovely to have you back here.”

“Morning, Carrie. I’ll have a …”

“Large cappuccino and a piece of carrot cake?” she asks, remembering my order from the day before.

“Absolutely. Perfect. Thanks.”

She heads off to make my coffee, and I set up my laptop again. A couple comes in, and Carrie talks to them for a while. She’s clearly a chatty, vivacious person. And I can use that to my advantage.

I need to discover who this woman is, how she knows Shane, how long she’s been in an intimate relationship with him – there was no mistaking the intensity of the kiss I witnessed yesterday – and if she knows anything about Holly and Dylan. Shane was still wearing his wedding ring, but he could’ve fibbed and said he was a widower or something like that. Also – does she know about Fancy Watch? Does Shane have two women on the side?

Carrie brings my coffee and cake. She places them down with a smile.

“I’m an author,” I lie. “Well, not yet, I’m writing my first book.”

This spikes Carrie’s interest. “Oh, very cool. What kind of book?”

I need something that she’s not going to ask too many details about. “It’s not that exciting. It’s a non-fiction book about being a woman in a high-powered role in banking institutions. I want to share my top tips and advice with other women just starting out. I’ve taken a sabbatical from work so I can write it.”

“That’s a very noble thing to do. Good for you.”

“Thanks,” I reply. And realise my lie is actually something I’d quite like to do one day. And it makes me feel a tiny bit better about fibbing.

Carrie heads off to serve other customers, and I know I’m on my way to building a rapport with her.
